Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute

The Office for Health Equity and Inclusion has hosted the Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute, also known as MHSSI, for over 10 years. Check out a preview of our programs!

Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy

Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy is a 10-week program designed for rising junior and senior undergraduates or recent graduates of an accredited college or university who are interested in attending medical school.

CDA offers a diverse, inclusive environment and helps students with the process of studying for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and applying to medical school. The curriculum is aligned with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Competencies.

CDA Program Information

This program is open to all students with an interest in medicine and health equity. Students from underrepresented groups in medicine, rural communities, and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

  • Program Dates: Tuesday, May 27, 2025 - Saturday, August 2, 2025

Students may not take academic classes or be engaged in other activities that would prevent them from attending all training sessions and workshops. This program is designed to be a full-time experience, including scheduled workshops during daytime hours, as well as evening and weekend activities. 

  • U.S. citizen or legal resident  
  • Valid U.S. Social Security number  
  • College junior, senior, or recent graduate (within the last 3 years) who are planning to apply to medical school  
  • Demonstrated socioeconomic disadvantage, educational disadvantage, or desire to work in underserved communities  
  • Minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA
  • Minimum 3.2 science GPA  

Completed the following courses:  

  • 2 semesters of Chemistry with labs (e.g., Inorganic, Organic, General, and Biochemistry)  
  • 2 semesters of Biology with labs  
  • 1 semester of Physics  
  • 1 semester of Math (e.g., Statistics, Computer Science, Calculus)   

 

  • American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) preparation  
  • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation  
  • Leadership and professional development training
  • Mock Interviews with Medical School Admissions

  • Networking opportunities with healthcare professionals
  • Opportunities to connect with medical student mentors

Michigan Health Sciences Undergraduate Research Academy

The Michigan Health Sciences Undergraduate Research Academy is a 10-week program designed for undergraduate students who want to explore biomedical research and health career pathways in a stimulating, inclusive environment. Students gain exposure to U-M Medical School and Michigan Medicine healthcare professionals. The curriculum is aligned with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Competencies.

The URA program includes numerous evenings, as well as a few weekend activities designed to build community and awareness. Students may not take academic classes or be engaged in other activities that would prevent them from attending all training sessions

Additional Pre-Medical Opportunities
Pre-med pathways day students in a large lecture hall University of Michigan Pre-Medical Pathways Day

Pre-medical students from all three University of Michigan campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint) can visit the U-M Medical School for a half-day event. Students learn about medical school admissions and OHEI summer program opportunities, tour the medical school campus, hear from a medical student panel, and chat with medical students. Beyond providing an overview of medical school admissions and student life, this event is intended to connect undergraduate students and student organizations from all three campuses not only with each other, but also with U-M Medical School students and faculty.

OHEI will provide workshops for pre-medical students about OHEI Summer Program Opportunities and topics related to medical school preparation. Previous workshops include Studying for the MCAT Exam, Breakdown of the AMCAS Application, Writing Advice and the AMCAS Personal Statement, Work & Activities/Secondary Application Essays, Constructing a Professional Resume, and a U-M Medical School Admissions talk.
