Longtime U-M faculty member Michael D. Fetters, M.D., MPH, MA, died July 16, 2023, of pancreatic cancer.
Fetters joined the Medical School as a lecturer and bioethics fellow in the Department of Family Medicine in 1994. He was promoted to professor in 2012.
A caring and beloved family physician and renowned physician-scientist, he saw patients at U-M Domino’s Farms Family Medicine and published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles over the course of his 30-year medical career.
In 1994, Fetters established the U-M Japanese Family Health Program, which serves the growing population of Japanese families living in the Midwest and beyond.
In 2015, Fetters co-founded the U-M Mixed Methods Program, which promotes specialized research methodology and scholarship across academic disciplines through education, training, consulting, and mentoring.
Fetters is survived by his wife, Sayoko Moroi, M.D. (Fellowship 1995), chair of ophthalmology at Ohio State University College of Medicine, and professor emerita of ophthalmology and visual sciences at U-M Medical School. He’s also survived by four sons — Kori, Tomoyuki, Kazuhisa, and Takashi Fetters — and many loving relatives and friends.
