The Need

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the U.S. Each year, more than 15,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer, and 1 out 5 of them will not survive. Research studies can uncover new ways to prevent, treat, and cure childhood cancers. However, the percentage of federal funding granted to pediatric cancer research studies remains in the single digits.

Creating New Hope for Pediatric Cancer

Children battling cancer deserve more effective therapies, improved outcomes, fewer harmful side effects, and more hope. That’s why we fundraise year-round to support our Block Out Cancer campaign. This vital effort is ongoing throughout the year and culminates in a big push during September’s National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Proceeds from Block Out Cancer provide crucial support for groundbreaking research and patient programs at the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Campaign contributions help our physicians and scientists move one step closer to discovering cures that benefit children everywhere.

Every year, the support of generous donors, businesses, volunteers, and community groups pushes us forward in our goal to block out cancer and provides encouragement to patients at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. This widespread involvement is helping expand our personalized approach to care, increase survival rates, and enhance treatments. We hope you will join the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your donation fuels critical research and programs for pediatric cancer patients and families at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Funds raised by our Block Out Cancer campaign are used to address the greatest needs of our pediatric oncology program.

Donations go toward research and patient care initiatives that receive little attention from traditional funding sources. They enable the start-up of innovative programs designed to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. They also make our comfort and support services for patients and families possible.

Here are examples of what your donations can do:

  • $25 can provide test tubes, vials, or other supplies that our physicians and scientists need to care for patients or to conduct studies.
  • $50 can support bedside, child-life activities that bring smiles to young cancer patients.
  • $75 can cover a blood test used to aid a diagnosis or monitor a patient’s progress.
  • $150 covers the co-pay for chemotherapy medications and targeted therapies for one patient’s treatment cycle.
  • $350 will fund a tissue characterization procedure, which can improve diagnosis and enable more targeted treatments.
  • $500 will give researchers the necessary supplies to design an analysis of cancer cell lines.
  • $750 supports the process used to extract a patient’s DNA and RNA for gene sequencing.
  • $1,125 covers the lab equipment and supplies needed for one patient’s gene analysis.
  • $5,000 helps support laboratory studies leading to new drug developments.
  • $10,000 can help hire a unit host that provides non-medical guidance to families and connects them with any resources they may need during their child’s hospital stay.
  • $25,000 can provide mental and emotional support services for patients and families coping with a cancer diagnosis.
