ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Nonprofit Hyundai Hope On Wheels presented the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital with a $250,000 award in support of pediatric cancer research.
During the Aug.8 event, children at the hospital participated in the program’s signature handprint ceremony, which involved dipping their hands in paint and placing handprints on a white 2023 Hyundai Tucson. Their colorful handprints on the official Hope Vehicle represent their individual and collective journeys, hopes and dreams.
“The Hyundai vehicle with painted handprints is a great representation of our Little Victors and their incredible journeys,” said Luanne Thomas Ewald, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., chief operating officer of Mott and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.
“We are grateful to Hyundai Hope On Wheels for helping make this event possible once again.”
Mott pediatric neuro-oncologist John Prensner, M.D., Ph.D. is the recipient of this year’s Hyundai Impact Award at Mott. His work is focused on expanding research about the most challenging childhood brain cancers, including a rare aggressive tumor known as atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor.
“Children with brain cancers are one of the toughest groups of patients to treat with conventional treatment options. My work is directed at connecting new discoveries that we make in the lab to options for children with atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors,” said Prensner.
“Support from Hyundai Hope On Wheels is a wonderful testament to their dedication to push forward pediatric cancer research and accelerate the pace that we can help cure all children with cancer.”
Mott has received more than $3 million in cancer research support from Hyundai Hope On Wheels over the last 12 years. Hyundai Hope On Wheels is celebrating its 25th year in the fight funding pediatric cancer research at select children’s hospitals nationwide.
“Hyundai Hope On Wheels is pleased to partner with the nation’s top hospitals and institutions like C.S. Mott Children's Hospital to fund lifesaving research and ultimately improve outcomes, treatments, and provide support for children battling cancer,” says John Guastaferro, executive director, Hyundai Hope On Wheels.
“As we celebrate 25 years, we are more grateful than ever for the dedication of our hospital partners to bring hope, spread awareness and continue in this fight against pediatric cancer.”
